What is Invisalign?

The Invisalign system is a sequence of clear removable aligners which offer a good alternative to braces - especially for adults concerned about wearing noticeable fixed braces.

Typically each aligner is worn for 2 weeks before replacing it with the next aligner in the sequence.

Invisalign can be used to treat a wide variety of malocclusions including:

  • Over / under / cross / open bite

  • Gap teeth

  • Crowded teeth

  • Misaligned teeth

How much does it cost?

The cost of Invisalign treatment is dependent on the complexity of your case. This can be anywhere between $4000 for mild cases and up to $9000 or more for more complex treatment.

At your consultation you will gain an understanding of your particular case and what kind of treatment options are available to you including the costs and time involved.

How many appointments will I need?

This is directly related to how long your Invisalign treatment will take and how much work needs to be done. In general however, you will need fewer in-office visits when compared with braces. With braces your visits are every 4-6 weeks and will Invisalign they are every 8-10 weeks.

How does it work?

Invisalign works by using a sequential series of clear plastic plates which are worn over your teeth to incrementally move your teeth into a better position. These aligners are custom-made from medical grade plastic and need to be worn 22hours per day to be effective. Invisalign incorporates clear attachments which need to be placed on some of your teeth to help the plastic grip your teeth and carry out the movements. Because the clear aligners are removable, you need to be able to commit to wearing your aligners as close to full time as possible for it to work well.

How long will it take to straighten my teeth with Invisalign?

This depends on the complexity of your case and how much work needs to be done. Mild crowding may only take 6 months to correct, while more complicated treatment can take as long as 18 to 24 months. Your orthodontist will give you an idea of how long your individual case is expected to take.

Is it painful?

Invisalign treatment feels very similar to braces as the underlying biological process of tooth movement is the same. With braces your teeth are adjusted approximately every 4-6 weeks and this is the time that pressure is usually felt. With Invisalign, you change your aligners every 1-2 weeks and you will feel some pressure when this happens, which usually dissipates after a day or two.

Braces vs Invisalign?

These are two very different ways to straighten your teeth in terms of how the treatment fits into your day-to-day life. Because braces are fixed on the teeth, treatment is less dependent on your compliance and the orthodontist is largely in control of moving your treatment progression. With Invisalign you are responsible for moving your teeth so your treatment duration and final result may be less than ideal if they are not worn exactly as directed. Your orthodontist can advise you of which treatment option is right for you.

Can kids and teenagers get Invisalign?

Patients of any age can have Invisalign treatment, however it is important to consider the advantages and disadvantages. Because Invisalign requires excellent co-operation and discipline, this option may not be ideal for younger children who cannot commit to extra care and motivation required with Invisalign. Your orthodontist will advise you if you are a good candidate for Invisalign or if there is a better option for you.
